GATE Agriculture Engineering overview

Agriculture Engineering is one of the papers in GATE exams. The eligibility criteria and other details for this paper is same as that of other papers. GATE Agriculture Engineering statistics

Below are some interesting statistics about this paper. I will expalin why it is important to know about these facts

  1. Number of candidates registered for the exam – 1,600 approx
  2. Number of candidates appeared for the exams – 1,400 approx
  3. Number of qualified candidates – 165
  4. Percentage of candidates passed – 12% approx
  5. Maximum marks out of 100 – 45.33
  6. Minimum marks out of 100 – 16.67
  7. Average marks is                   27.97
  8. Standard deviation                   6.67

Agriculture Engineering paper is one of the most difficult paper. The maximum marks of Agriculture Engineering is lowest among other papers. The average marks is also low. This makes it tough exams.

As maximum marks is low you should focus on scoring anything in range of 40%. It would give you good ranking. You should focus on topics with this thing in mind. There is no point covering every topic in Agriculture Engineering. You should clearly outline the topics you are good at nad focus more on those topics.

I have recommended two books.You can buy any one of them.But My recommendation will be the first one.More so the first one provides you in depth coverage of questions.So you are well covering different topics and increase chances of getting questions familiar to you.You can also go for second one as well but only if first one is not your choice for some reason.

GATE Agriculture Engineering Book 1

Below are features for which I am recommending this book

  • It is divided into topics for better planning and reading
  • It is highly rated by candidates who appeared for previous years of GATE exams

GATE Agriculture Engineering Book 2

This book is also highly rated. Candidates should select this one if they for some reason do not want first one.It has same features as the first one. Only problem with this book is lack of regular update. The latest edition is also few years old.

  • It provides solutions to previous year GATE exams 1991 to 2011 with hints.The hint feature makes it excellent book
  • Book is focused on GATE but serves purpose of other competitive exams as well
  • Highest rated book by the candidates
  • The book is old one but still applicable and used by candidates appearing for competitive exams.

As mentioned above I would recommend first one but that one is costlier than this one. So if cost is a factor for you then you can by the second book.

Linear Algebra

Matrices and determinants, systems of linear equations, Eigen values and eigen vectors.


Limit, continuity and differentiability; partial derivatives; maxima and minima; sequences and series; tests for convergence; Fourier series, Taylor series.

Vector Calculus

Gradient; divergence and curl; line; surface and volume integrals; Stokes, Gauss and Green’s theorems.

Differential Equations

Linear and non-linear first order Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE); Higher order linear ODEs with constant coefficients; Cauchy’s and Euler’s equations; Laplace transforms; Partial Differential Equations – Laplace, heat and wave equations.

Probability and Statistics

Mean, median, mode and standard deviation; random variables; Poisson, normal and binomial distributions; correlation and regression analysis; tests of significance, analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Numerical Methods

Solutions of linear and non-linear algebraic equations; numerical integration – trapezoidal and Simpson’s rule; numerical solutions of ODE

Tractors and Powertillers
